Homemade churros are so easy with this recipe! You’ll just need 5 ingredients and less than 30 minutes to make delicious churros for your fiesta or Cinco de Mayo party!
CALLING ALL CHURRO LOVERS!
“I hate Churros…said no Juan ever.” Haha. If you agree with this and love the taste of churros and want to try your hand at making your own, you are in for a treat. In all senses of the word.
Yes, homemade churros are amazing–they have the perfect crunchy outside, but soft inside that you love. However, you won’t have to spend hours making them or spend a fortune for them (yeah, no spending thirty bucks on 3 churros here!)
This homemade churro recipe is incredibly easy and fast to make. In 30 minutes, you can have around 50 mini churros made for your fiesta! Or just when you want a fun treat.
Who knew churros were so easy to make? Not me, until I tried them. And now, they are always requested for our Cinco de Mayo festivities.
HOMEMADE CHURROS INGREDIENTS
Making churros is so easy and all you need is some basic ingredients you most likely have in your pantry. You’ll need:
- all-purpose flour
- white sugar
- vegetable oil
- 2 quarts oil for frying
- white sugar
- chocolate chips
- heavy cream
SUPPLIES YOU NEED:
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup water, 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar, 1/2 tsp. salt and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Bring to a boil and then remove the pan from the stove. Carefully stir in flour until the mixture forms a ball.
Once the flour is mixed well into the water, it will become a soft dough ball that looks like this:
Let the dough rest for about 5 minutes on the counter to cool. While it is cooling, prepare your large piping bag with the star tip. I didn’t have a coupling for my piping bag, so I just slid the tip into the bag and then cut off the bottom.
Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or electric fry pan. You’ll want the oil to be at 375 degrees F or 190 C. Using your piping bag and star tip, pipe 2-inch strips of churro dough into the hot oil. Be careful! Pull out a great pair kitchen scissors. With one hand piping, use the other to cut off the churro pieces for a quick process!
Once the churros are golden brown on all sides, remove from oil and let drain on a plate covered with paper towels. Combine cinnamon and sugar and dip the churros into the sugar mixture.
To make churros con chocolate, melt 1 cup chocolate chips with 1-2 Tbsp. heavy cream in the microwave for 1 minute. Give it a good stir and return in 10-second increments until the chocolate is smooth and melted. Then dip the churros in!
HOW MANY CHURROS DOES ONE BATCH MAKE?
One recipe makes about 25, 2-inch mini churros. A double batch will make about 50.
CAN I MAKE IT WITHOUT THIS STAR TIP?
If you’re wondering if you can make these churros without the star tip, the answer is Yes and No. Yes, you most definitely can. I did not have a star tip the first time I made them. The picture below is how they turned out. They turned out fine and they were still gobbled up, however, a star tip will give them a much better texture! If you really want an authentic churro, invest in an inexpensive star tip. It will be so worth it!
Plus, if you don’t have star tip, you will need to roll the churro dough into a long snake-like piece and cut off into small sections. This way will take longer and be messier than using a piping bag and star tip to create your churros. And they won’t look as pretty.
HOW DO I MAKE CHURROS CON CHOCOLATE?
Homemade churros dipped in cinnamon and sugar are amazing in and of itself.
But… Churros con chocolate are to die for! Making a simple chocolate dipping sauce is so easy.
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 2 Tbsp. heavy cream
In a microwave safe bowl. Melt on high for 30-60 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds. Add more cream if you want the chocolate sauce thinner. Pour into a shallow serving ramekin and dip your amazing homemade churros in them!

- Heat oil for frying in deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Pipe strips of dough into hot oil using a pastry bag. Fry until golden; drain on paper towels.
- Combine 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll drained churros in cinnamon and sugar mixture.
- For churros con chocolate, melt chocolate chips in microwave with a few teaspoons of heavy cream. Stir well until thin. Dip!
This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.
