The History of this Back to School Tradition
I loved when Fall came around. That meant back to school! Even though my family didn’t have a ton of money, we always got to pick out a few new school outfits and pair of shoes, and a bag of new socks. Oh, how I love the smell of new socks! My mom would make sure she had a one-on-one date with each of us to help us find a few new outfits for the first week of school. That became one of my very favorite back to school traditions, and why I think I loved going back to school.
Now that I’m a mom, I can’t even imagine outfitting that many! I absolutely loved those memories of back to school shopping, though, so I’m so grateful my mom made the effort to create those memories with us.
After all 7 of us children were done with our back to school shopping, we’d have a family fashion show!
The weekend before school started, we would put on a Back to School Fashion Show! We loved our fashion shows! They were so simple, but so much fun! We’d lay out our outfits and one at a time, go out to the family room where my parents would be watching.
This back to school tradition was not only super fun, but it also prepared all of us for the first day of school by making sure we all knew what we would wear and had everything ready to go!
How to Put on a Back to School Fashion Show:
- Gather all new school clothes. It doesn’t matter how big or small your budget is or whether the clothes are brand new or thrifted.
- Mom and dad, grandparents, etc get comfy on the couch.
- Children take turns coming down the “catwalk” with their new clothes on.
- If you’re really brave, you could invite some friends over to join in the fun!
